NEW YORK — Medical centers across the United States are using a new type of antibiotic that has been shown to be effective in battling the deadly coronavirus.
New York’s Albany Medical Center said Wednesday that it has used a new antifuge called Bactrim that has shown in clinical trials that it works against the coronaviruses coronaviral and pneumococcal agents, as well as bacteria that cause pneumonia.
Bactrim, which is made by Pfizer, is used to treat bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a bacterium that can cause pneumonia and other serious infections.
It’s also used in the treatment of meningitis and other infections caused by bacteria, but it is not approved for use against coronavires.
The new medication was developed by Pfizers’ Immunotherapeutics division, and the company says it has sold a total of 15 million doses worldwide.
The company is working with other manufacturers to produce the drug.
Albany has about 100 beds for patients who are hospitalized with coronavirochism.
The hospital is treating a large number of patients with COVID-19 who have not been able to be treated with other antibiotics.
